August Greene - August Greene

August Greene is a new project from Common, which sees him working again with longtime collaborators Karriem Riggins and Robert Glasper. Bringing pianist Glasper into the fold underscores Common's longtime interest in marrying jazz and hip hop. The debut album from the trio also brings in a new collaborator, and a name that I had not heard in a while, Brandy!

Liza Anne - Fine But Dying

Fine But Dying is the third album from this artist from Georgia (the U.S. state). On the record, she deals head-on with past struggles with mental illness and the various interpersonal effects, as well as the conflict between internal state and outward appearance.

Shamir - Resolution

Resolution was a surprise release from Shamir. He had previously announced an EP, Room, and released a few songs from that project. It's not his first surprise release; last year, he released Hope before the more traditional release cycle of Revelations.

Young Fathers - Cocoa Sugar

Young Fathers are a trio from Edinburgh. Their music is generally described as hip-hop, though that's a limiting descriptor for them. They also incorporate elements of pop, club music, and industrial. Cocoa Sugar is their third record.

Autre Ne Veut - Age of Transparency

Autre Ne Veut has a somewhat unique style of singing. It's pleading, emotional, and borders almost on whiny, stopping just short enough to be still be enjoyable. He released his sophomore album, Anxiety, in 2013 to broad critical acclaim, getting featured on numerous year-end lists. On his follow-up, he doesn't stray from his brand of twisted R&B, crafting another great collection of songs.

Deafheaven - New Bermuda

Deafheaven is one of those rare black metal bands who have also gained a certain degree of "hipster cred." Their sophomore album, Sunbather, saw them getting rave reviews from traditionally indie-focused sites like Pitchfork and Stereogum. And like Autre Ne Veut, they have a well-received second album to live up to. They've done so by digging into the heavier elements of their sound. The stray somewhat from the shoegaze elements that helped make them popular with the likes of Pitchfork, but somehow not alienating any of that fanbase.

Janet Jackson - Unbreakable

All hail! It seems forever since we last heard from Miss Jackson (yeah, I'm nasty); she released her last album, Discipline, back in 2008. At nearly 50 years old, Janet proves that she still has it, this 11th studio album was her seventh to hit number one on the charts and made her one of very few artists to top the charts four decades in row. She continues to do what she does well with a great collection of dance floor-ready tunes.

Nicolas Godin - Contrepoint

Nicolas Godin is one-half of the French ambient duo Air. Though the two have 20 years and eight albums together, this is just Godin's first solo record (his music partner, Jean-Benoît Dunckel, released his first nine years ago). Many artists are inspired by those who came before, but Godin is looking way back for this one, with an album of neo-classical compositions inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Wavves - V

Though I started listening to Wavves back in their days of irreverent pop punk, around and before the release of King of the Beach, it was their last album (Afraid of Heights) that put them on another level in terms of my feelings of their music. The music was still had punk influences, but seemed far more mature in subject matter. They continue with that maturity on this, their fifth album (duh). If anything, they've calmed down even more on this one, but it's another great record from the band.

Desaparecidos - Payola

Conor Oberst has had a lot of projects. He's best known for his work as Bright Eyes, but has also been a member of the supergroup Monsters of Folk (with Mike Mogis, M. Ward, and Jim Jones), and guested on numerous artists' songs; he has been focused on a solo career lately. He was a member of Desaparecidos in the early-aughts, though the band was on hiatus throughout much of the 2000s. They reunited in 2012 and are releasing their first album in more than a decade this year.

Everything Everything - Get to Heaven

This band with the kitchen-sink sound just get better and better with each album. Though they didn't have much praise for their sophomore album, Arc, is was one of my favorites in 2013. The quick turn-around on the new record is meant as a "fix" on something the band considered "broken," but I'm still excited for a new record.

Frank Zappa - Dance Me This

Frank Zappa may have passed away more than 20 years ago, he's been just as busy in death as he was in life. There have been over 30 albums released since his 1993 passing; sadly, this looks like it may be the last. The record comprises the last material he worked on before his death.

Son Lux - Bones

2013's Lanterns was a beautiful, haunting, and overall incredible album from Son Lux. The album, which was the band's third, was recorded as a solo record for Ryan Lott. This time around, he gets some help from drummer Ian Chang and guitarist Rafiq Bhatia. He's a great collaborator (see his work as Sisyphus with Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti, as well as the rerecording of "Easy" with Lorde), so I hope that more musicians make things even better.
