Upcoming Album of the Week (Ending December 15, 2018)

Grammy nominations were announced this week. There was, of course, the usual spate of disappointments, but they'll never please everyone. While there are certainly things I think were overlooked, I'm excited about nods to St. Vincent for Alternative Album of the Year, about half of the best new artist field, and Janelle Monáe and Brandi Carlile for Album of the Year!

This week, Ben Shemie announced his solo debut, A Skeleton.

Shemie is better known as the frontman for the Montreal band Suuns. With Suuns, he has released four albums of avant-garde, progressive rock, including this year's Felt. The band also released a collaborative album with fellow Montréalais Jerusalem in My Heart in 2015.

As described, Shemie's solo album sounds like it will have a similar overall style to his work with him band, but a little more stripped back. The new album was announced on Wednesday along with the title track.

A Skeleton is scheduled for release on February 15.

Camp Cope - How to Socialise & Make Friends

This band from Melbourne, Australia formed in 2015 and released their self-titled debut in 2016. They are known for their DIY approach to indie rock, but take on a more stripped back approach for their sophomore record. The result is more in-line with their live shows, taking advantage of being a small band.

Haley Heynderickx - I Need to Start a Garden

I Need to Start a Garden is the debut album for this artist from Oregon. Haley's music draws from a number of influences, from her own religious upbringing, to Bob Dylan, to more elusive female folk singers like Vashti Bunyan.

Lucy Dacus - Historian

I saw Lucy Dacus open for Hamilton Leithauser in early 2017. She mostly played from her first album, No Burden, but also performed at least one new song. I am not 100% sure if any of those songs made it onto this record, but they were the first indication that the follow-up to her 2016 record would be just as amazing!

Suuns - Felt

I'm am still obsessed with the incredible debut album, Zeroes QC, from this band. While I don't think they've ever quite recaptured the work on that record on subsequent albums, but have remained excellent on each. They are already on their fourth album in just under ten years (fifth if you count the collaborative album with Jerusalem in My Heart).
Their latest still find that artsy groove, but aims for something more emotional.

Tracey Thorn - Record

Tracey Thorn was one-half of Everything but the Girl until 2000. She released her first solo album in 1982, the same year that EBTG started, but did not return to her solo career until 2007 with Out of the Woods. Since that return, has released two more studio albums (including this one), a Christmas record, and 3 EPs.

Upcoming Album of the Week (Ending January 13)

Happy New Years, everyone! We are past the relative lull of the holidays (at least as far as new music goes) and back in the swing of new releases and new announcements. As always, you can view a longer list of albums set to be released over the next few months over at my Upcoming Releases page!

This week, Suuns announced their fourth album, Felt.

Suuns is a Canadian band hailing from Montreal, with an dark, experimental, art rock sound. I first started to listen to them some time after their 2010 debut album, Zeroes QC, falling in love especially with two stand out tracks from the record, "Armed for Peace" and "Up Past the Nursery". They have released two additional albums since that debut, 2013's Images du Futur and 2016's Hold/Still, as well as a collaborative album, Suuns and Jerusalem in My Heart, with Jerusalem in My Heart in 2015.

They announced their latest record on Thursday, along with a new song and video, "Watch Me, Watch You".

The album is set for release on March 2.

Cate Le Bon - Crab Day

This is the fourth album overall from this Welsh singer. Her last solo album was 2013's Mug Museum, though she partnered with Tim Presley as DRINKS and released Hermits on Holiday last year. She does not stray far from her usually unusual style on this record.

J Dilla - Diary

J Dilla's career spanned just over a decade and three albums. Though he passed away in 2006, more music has been released since his death than before. With this album, he intended to focus on vocals over production, and to work with some of his favorite producers. It was shelved due to record label frustrations, but many of those producers, and other rappers, came together to finally complete and release the record.

PJ Harvey - The Hope Six Demolition Project

PJ Harvey has never been one to shy away from social issues and her latest album is no exception. She takes on the subject of housing projects in the US; specifically the HOPE IV project, which was seen to hinder affordable housing more than help it. Though her choice of subject did not come without criticism, the album has become the latest critically-acclaimed release in her celebrated career.

Sam Beam & Jesca Hoop - Love Letter for Fire

I often forget that Iron & Wine is just a stage name, one that Sam Beam has been performing under for over a decade. This is actually the first album of his credited to his real name. He continues a recent streak of collaborations, this time working with Jesca Hoop, who has also been performing since the early aughts, as well (though under her own name).

Suuns - Hold/Still

I first became enthralled by Suuns' music five years ago, following their debut album, Zeroes QC. They've continued to impress me with their subsequent releases, including last year's self-titled collaboration with Jerusalem in My Heart. Their music remains hypnotic and pulsing, but they take on a more polished sheen on this record with the help of producer John Congleton.
