Essential Full-Length Releases

D∆WN - Redemption

Dawn Richard left the made-on-TV band Danity Kane behind in 2009 (disregarding a short-lived reunion four years later), and embarked on a string of critically-acclaimed solo releases starting with 2013's Goldenheart. Redemption completes a trilogy started with that album; exploring a theme of self-realization.

Justice - Woman

The duo Justice became the poster boy for modern French house music when they released their debut album in 2007. Woman is their third album, following a five year break in new studio recordings. The album isn't much of a departure, their sound is still epic, with hard rock riffs, choirs, and industrial sounds.

Essential Full-Length Releases

of Montreal - Innocence Reaches

For his 14th album with of Montreal, Kevin Barnes seems to be bringing his style of music in line with his image. Through a variety of musical styles, ranging from folk to punk, his own persona has always had a glam element to it; the band's latest album finally sees him incorporating glam-pop. Barnes dropped names like Chairlift, Arca, and Jack Ü as influences on the record, a surprising statement from an artist who claims to have eschewed modern pop music.

Watch: "it’s different for girls"
Watch: "let's relate"

Rae Sremmurd - Sremmlife 2

I'm really not sure whether this young hip-hop duo is actually good, but I find their music to be fun as hell. They're part of a new wave a hip-hop, one that includes iLoveMakonnen and Future, that often feels more dedicated to style than substance. Things don't get any deeper than girls, drugs, and partying. That's ok though; sometimes I just want to bob my head and not think of anything. This is the perfect soundtrack for that.

Essential Full-Length Releases

Bat for Lashes - The Bride

Natasha Khan debuted a new project, Sexwitch, last year, but is already back with a new solo record. Following 2012's The Haunted Man, her new album is a conceptual piece, told from the perspective of a woman whose fiancé (spoiler alert) dies on the way to their wedding. The album was announced with materials that made me think that the artist may just be announcing her own wedding. I was pretty excited for her, but I guess this is cool, too!

Watch: "In God’s House"
Watch: "Sunday Love"

Blood Orange - Freetown Sound

Blood Orange is Dev Hynes and Freetown Sound is his third album under the name, which he has been his alias since putting Lightspeed Champion on hiatus in 2010. The album, which was released a few days ahead of time, is meant to speak to people who find themselves at odds between their identity and other people's expectations of them.

Watch: "Augustine"
Listen: "By Ourselves"

Sara Watkins - Young in All the Wrong Ways

Nickel Creek may have reunited two years ago for a new album, A Dotted Line, but that hasn't stopped its members from continuing in their solo careers. Both of her previous bandmates have released albums since and now Sara is back with her third solo record.

The Skiffle Players - Skifflin’

Skiffle refers to a musical genre, inspired by jazz, blues, and folk, which all but disappeared from American lexicon by the 1940s. The genre had a brief revival in the 1950s and 1960s in Britain, but one American performer is giving it another go. Cass McCombs formed this side project with Neal Casal, Dan Horne, Dave Scher, and Aaron Speske. This is the first new material from him since 2013's Big Wheel and Others.
