My Favorite Things of the Week

Good news from the world of '90s alternative rock, John Frusciante is rejoining the Red Hot Chili Peppers! Frusciante has been the on-again-off-again as the guitarist for the group, last leaving the band in 2009. He was replaced by Josh Klinghoffer, who is now departing. I'm excited to see what their next album will sound like with the iconic guitarist back in the fold!

Lizzo has released several music videos for tracks from her third album, Cuz I Love You. Though she previously released a video for "Good as Hell," she released another video for the track this week. This video sees her joining up with the Southern University marching band in multiple roles; including bandleader, flutist, and dancer. The video brought out some real marching band nostalgia for me!

As beloved an artist as Frank Ocean is, I've heard surprisingly few covers from his contemporaries. This week, Nilüfer Yanya offered her take on "Super Rich Kids," for Triple J's Like a Version series.

Greg Dulli will be releasing a new solo album early next year, and released the album's first single, "Pantomima." The song bodes well for a great album from the artist!

The next album from The Flaming Lips will be a collaborative album with Deap Vally.

The two bands have formed a new group, called Deap Lips, and will release a self-titled album on March 13. The collaboration is one that is both surprising, and perfectly sensical.

Lana Del Rey - Lust for Life

Del Rey's work has always been marked by her penchant for moodiness. The smile on the cover of her latest album indicates a slightly lighter mood for the record. She's an artist who just keeps getting better, expanding her stylistic influences, guest vocalists, and moods on this latest record.

Nicole Atkins - Goodnight Rhonda Lee

Nicole Atkins fourth album comes ten years after her debut, Neptune City, and follows a period of transition for the artist. She's on a new record label, has relocated from New Jersey to Nashville, and is working with a new production team. Rhonda Lee is a reference to Atkins' self-professed alter ego, one that comes out when she's acting up. Perhaps the album is an attempt to exorcise that part of herself.

Tyler, The Creator - Flower Boy

This latest album from Tyler, The Creator, seems to expose some revelatory truths about the rapper. Response to much of his early work was punctuated by accusations of homophobia (not totally undeserved). On this album, though, he seems to reference his own homosexual experiences. He's matured quite a bit since starting his career; Flower Boy is the apex of that maturation and the first time I've been able to take him really seriously.

AlunaGeorge - I Remember

AlunaGeorge have always been a band built on collaborations. Even before their debut album, 2013's Body Music, they had worked with Disclosure on the track "White Noise." On their sophomore album, they bring in another young production powerhouse in Flume, and rappers Leikeli47 and Popcaan, along with many others.

Cymbals Eat Guitars - Pretty Years

Thanks to gradual line-up changes since the band formed in 2007; only one original member of Cymbals Eat Guitars remains on this record, frontman Joe D'Agostino. It's clear that D'Agostino was the primary arbiter of the band's sound, the album is a sensible continuation of their style. The album also sees the band working with another influential producer. After two records with John Agnello, they join up with John Congleton for the first time.

Kishi Bashi - Sonderlust

Kishi Bashi is Kaoru Ishibashi, a violinist and songwriter who has toured and played with Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, and of Montreal. He released his debut album, 151a, in 2012, following it up with Lighght two years later. He seems to be holding to a two-year album release schedule. He gets some help from of Montreal in return on this one, Kevin Barnes provides bass on a track.

Mykki Blanco - Mykki

Hip-hop is often a hyper-masculine industry, but there are a few artists seeking to change that view of the genre. Mykki Blanco is one of them. He has described himself as transgendered and multi-gendered, and often touches on these subjects in his music. He's claimed that he may not continue his music career and would be interested in a career as an investigative reporter focusing on LGBT issues. If he does, it would not be before releasing this debut album.

A Tribe Called Red - We Are the Halluci Nation

A Tribe Called Red is a group of Canadian DJs, all members of First Nations tribes. Their name is an homage to the hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest and, similar to that group, they tackle issues that impact their community. We Are the Halluci Nation is their third album and features contributions from Tanya Tagaq, Saul Williams, and Yasiin Bey.
