Austra - Future Politics

Austra is a Toronto-based electronic band fronted by Katie Stelmanis. Their third album, following 2013's Olympia, sees them paring down the group from six to three members and finds inspiration in electro cumbia music, to which Stelmanis was introduced following a trip to Mexico. Although the album was written prior to the political tumult that occurred in the back half of 2016, it (as can be well-guessed from the title) takes on a political bent.

Foxygen - Hang

Following a spectacular second album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic, Foxygen released an album that was a bit harder to love. 2014's ...And Star Power clocked in at an overwhelming 24 tracks. They've winnowed back down for their fourth album to just eight tracks (their first two albums contained seven and nine tracks respectively). The directed focus suits them well, with full orchestras, backing singers, and 70s-inspired grooves, the album is lush enough without being overlong.

Michael Chapman - 50

Chapman is a 76-year-old British guitarist whose career is 50-years-old. His latest album commemorates the length of his career. He's released nearly as many records over that time, and he considers this to be his "American" album. Working with Steve Gunn, he's crafted an album that sounds like it comes from someone much younger.

Damaged Bug - Cold Hot Plumbs

Thee Oh Sees and frontman John Dwyer are quickly reaching Guided By Voices/Robert Pollard levels of prolificness. In May, the band continued their consistency in releasing a new album every year with Mutilator Defeated at Last. Last year, Dwyer began his solo project Damaged Bug with Hubba Bubba. Just one year later, and a few weeks after the latest with his band, he is back with his sophomore solo record.

FFS - FFS

FFS is the collaboration of two very different bands; Franz Ferdinand, a Scottish art rock band active since the early 2000s, and Sparks, an LA chamber pop band around since 1971. It's not clear how exactly they hooked up, but it seems they've been recording together since around 2005. I'm not very familiar with Sparks, but the collaboration is certainly more experimental than the music that Franz Ferdinand create on their own.

No Joy - More Faithful

No Joy is a Canadian shoegaze band active since 2009. They began their career in their native Montréal and quickly gained the attention of more prominent musicians, including Grant Hart of Hüsker Dü and Bethany Cosentino, who described them as "Two hot blonde girls just shredding away." Six years and three albums later, they are still going strong, and getting better with every release.
