Essential Full-Length Releases

Father John Misty - God’s Favorite Customer

Josh Tillman has been a very prolific artist since starting his career in 2004, with 12 album both under the name J. Tillman and under his newer moniker, Father John Misty. He's followed up his last record, 2017's Pure Comedy, fairly quickly, with an album he jokingly referred to as its Pure Comedy 2 while touring for the previous record.

Watch: "Mr. Tillman"
Watch: "Date Night"

LUMP - LUMP

LUMP is the latest record from the spectacular Laura Marling, partnering with Mike Lindsay of TUNNG. It's a short, but sweet album. Vocally, the record is similar to her solo work, but Lindsay's involvement lends a different instrumentation to her sound.

Watch: "Curse of the Contemporary"
Watch: "May I Be the Light"

Natalie Prass - The Future and the Past

Prass scrapped the initial follow-up to her 2015 self-titled debut following the 2016 election. A different record came out of her frustration with the results. She channels those frustrations into an R&B-inflected record that calls for unity in these times.

Watch: "Short Court Style"
Watch: "The Fire"

Neko Case - Hell-On

Only Neko Case could make me look beyond the worst album art I've seen this year (I'm sorry Neko, though I still love you). She is as masterful as ever on her seventh album, showcasing the sounds she's developed both as a solo artist and with The New Pornographers, as well as introducing some new ideas.

Watch: "Last Lion of Albion"
Watch: "Curse of the I-5 Corridor" (featuring Mark Lanegan)

The Saxophones - Songs of The Saxophones

The Saxophones are the husband-wife duo of Alexi Erenkov and Alison Alderdice. They've released a series of short EPs together over the past couple of year, this is their first studio album.

Essential Full-Length Releases

Renata Zeiguer - Old Ghost

Renata Zeiguer is a performer of Argentinean and Philippine descent, raised in New York City. Her music combines a variety of influences, from classical composers to more modern pop music. She released her first EP, 2013's Horizons, under the name Cantina. I hear a bit of Twin Sister in her music, an unsurprising link as she has worked with the band in the past.

Watch: "Wayside"
Watch: "Follow Me Down"

Screaming Females - All At Once

Screaming Females have been together for more than a decade and six previous albums. In that time, they've become known for their energy when performing live. For their sixth album, they sought to capture the spirit of their live shows. The result is more experimental than their past work, but the results prove the band is even better for it!

Watch: "Glass House"
Watch: "I’ll Make You Sorry"

Turnstile - Time & Space

Turnstile is a hardcore punk act out of Baltimore. They've previously released three EPs and one album, 2015's Nonstop Feeling. Their sophomore album features vocals from another rocker, Tina Halladay of the Philly band Sheer Mag.

Essential Full-Length Releases

Alexandra Savior - Belladonna of Sadness

Alexandra Savior is a young singer from Portland who's become a bit of a protegé of The Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner. She co-wrote a track on The Last Shadow Puppets album last year and Turner, in turn (heh), contributed writing to this debut from Savior. She draws inspiration from a variety of sources, ranging from Otis Redding to Adele, and has even found inspiration in Terry Gilliam's films.

Watch: "Mystery Girl"
Watch: "M.T.M.E."

Arca - Arca

This self-titled album is the third album overall for this Venezuelan artist. His first two albums focused on his production, this record is the first to feature his vocals, presented entirely in his native language and entirely improvised. He had not initially intended to sing on the record, the suggestion came from Björk (a friend and collaborator of Arca's). The shift has paid off for the artist, earning an already-praised musician some of the best reviews of his career.

Watch: "Reverie"
Watch: "Anoche"

Future Islands - The Far Field

Thanks in no small part to frontman's Samuel Herring's unique dance moves, Future Islands had a big 2014 with their fourth album, Singles. Despite following up that album, aspects of this release are more closely tied to their third album, In Evening Air. Both albums share a cover artist (Kymia Nawabi) and source of inspiration for the title (the poems of Theodore Roethke). Still, the album sees the band reaching for ever greater heights.

Watch: "Ran"
Watch: "Cave"

Karen Elson - Double Roses

It's been a little while since we've last heard from Elson, at least on the music front. The model and musician released her first album, The Ghost Who Walks, in 2010,  but has been more active in the fashion world since. She has released one-off singles, often for the Record Store Days, and done some touring. She started working on her second album in 2015. The album features an impressive set of guests, including fellow Brit Laura Marling, Father John Misty, and Patrick Carney of The Black Keys.

Watch: "Call Your Name"
Listen: "Distant Shore"

The New Pornographers - Whiteout Conditions

I don't think I will ever stop loving The New Pornographers. The indie supergroup has released seven albums, each as amazing as the last. I was a little worried about this album before it was released. The band announced that member Dan Bejar (who is also a member of Destroyer and Swan Lake) would not be appearing on the record. His voice is one of my favorites of the group, but the group doesn't suffer in his absence; of course, Neko Case cures all ills. This is another great album from the band!

Watch: "High Ticket Attractions"
Listen: "This Is the World of the Theatre"
