Essential Full-Length Releases

Deerhoof - Future Teenage Cave Artists

Deerhoof went in a different direction with their last album. 2017's Mountain Moves, bringing a large number of collaborators. The follow-up hearkens back to earlier work, with a title that indicates the band's isolationist approach and their conceptual view towards the future.

Watch: "Future Teenage Cave Artists"

Mrs. Piss is a new project from Jess Gowrie and Chelsea Wolfe. The project started while the pair were touring for Wolfe's 2017 album, Hiss Spun. The project has given them a new opportunity to work together and a platform on which to bring in other female performers.

Watch: "Knelt"
Watch: "Downer Surrounded by Uppers"

Nicole Atkins - Italian Ice

Italian Ice is the fifth album from this New Jersey artist, following 2017's Goodnight Rhonda Lee. On the album, Atkins collaborates with a number of her contemporaries, including McKenzie Smith (of Midlake), bassist David Hood, and Britt Daniel (of Spoon).

Watch: "Captain" (featuring Britt Daniel)
Watch: "Domino"

PINS - Hot Slick

PINS became a fast favorite of mine after the release of their 2015 sophomore album, Wild Nights. I waited dutifully for a follow-up and gobbled up every interim project released, including the 2017 EP, Bad Thing, and frontwoman Faith Vern's collaborations with Iggy Pop. Finally, their third album is here, and I am beyond excited!

Essential Full-Length Releases

DAWN - new breed

Maybe it's due to Mardi Gras, but I feel like I've been learning a lot about the culture of New Orleans and Mardi Gras recently. Members of Arcade Fire recorded a version of "Iko Iko" (you know the melody even if you don't know the song), and there's this fifth album from Dawn Richard. The artist explore her home city on the record, which includes references to Mardi Gras Indians.

This is the third album from this talented folk cellist. The Capitalist Blues will not be her only album of 2019, though. She is also reuniting with former Carolina Chocolate Drops bandmate Rhiannon Giddens for Our Native Daughters (along with Amethyst Kiah and Allison Russell) for a self-titled record.

Watch: "Capitalist Blues"

Better Oblivion Community Center - Better Oblivion Community Center

This album from Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst was released with fairly little press ahead of the record, but did not come from nowhere. The two first met in 2016 and Oberst featured on a song from Bridgers' debut album, Stranger in the Alps. They started recording their first full album together last summer.

Essential Full-Length Releases

Cullen Omori - New Misery

Cullen Omori was the lead singer of Smith Westerns with his brother Cameron, and a few others, starting in 2007. Unfortunately, the band members went their separate ways two years ago. A few of the former members have started new projects, including Cullen. While some of the others have started all new bands, Cullen has gone solo. New Misery is his debut album.

Watch: "Cinnamon"
Listen: "Sour Silk"

Glitterbust - Glitterbust

Kim Gordon also recently left the band that she started her career with. After thirty years, and a marriage, together, the Sonic Youth disbanded in 2011. The band's members have started new projects since, most notably Gordon, Thurston Moore, and Lee Ranaldo. Gordon previously released Coming Apart with Body/Head in 2013. This year, she's releasing a new album with a new band; one she started with Alex Knost of Tomorrows Tulips.

Iggy Pop - Post Pop Depression

James Osterberg has had a incredible career as a musician. He started out with The Stooges in 1967 and released his first solo album as Iggy Pop in 1977. He's done many types of music, from punk to art rock to new wave, and even French-language chanson. On his latest album, he's back to his rock roots and getting some help from younger rock icons, Joshua Homme and Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age, and Matt Helders of Arctic Monkeys. Unfortunately, he has implied that this may be his last record, though he's made it a good one!

Listen: "Gardenia"
Listen: "Break into Your Heart"

Koi Child - Koi Child

I don't have any major issues with Iggy Azalea, except that she represents a missed opportunity in my eyes: she's a rapper from Australia, but doesn't seek to represent Australian hiphop. Koi Child may be able to fill that void. They are a jazz rap group hailing from Perth. They formed two years ago as a combination of two other acts, Childs Play and Kashikoi. Their debut album is produced by another Australian musician, Kevin Parker of Tame Impala.
