Essential Full-Length Releases

ALMA - Have U Seen Her?

This is the debut album from this Finnish singer who started her career on the country's version of Idol, where she finished fifth. She spent the past couple of years working with fellow Nords MØ and Tove Lo, as well as Charli XCX and Miley Cyrus.

Watch: "LA Money"

The Magnetic Fields - Quickies

This new album from The Magnetic Fields follows 2017's 50 Song Memoir. Their albums usually have some interesting concept to them, and this is no different. As the title suggests, the album is made up of super-short songs, none longer than two minutes 35 seconds.

Watch: "Kraftwerk in a Blackout"
Watch: "I’ve Got a Date with Jesus"

Moses Sumney - græ

This seems to be the year of releasing albums in pieces. Hayley Williams released half of her debut album several months before the full release, and Moses Sumney has done something similar for his follow up to 2017's Aromanticism. The first half of græ was released February. Now, we get the full release of the beautiful new record.

Perfume Genius - Set My Heart on Fire Immediately

Perfume Genius has steadily released one incredible album after another. His latest may be his best, receiving the highest average ratings for his career. Inspiration for the album came out of Mike Hadreas' 2019 dance collaboration with Kate Wallich.

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down - Temple

To introduce their fifth album, Thao & The Get Down Stay Down set the standard for great quarantine music videos. I know that I've mentioned the "Phenom" video before, but it is just such a great show of creativity in our new reality.

Essential Full-Length Releases

Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino

Though the Arctic Monkeys were one of the core bands of the post-punk revival movement of the early-to-mid aughts, they've changed their sound with nearly every record. Their last, AM, recalled psychedelic and blues rocks sounds. This one, as best as I can describe it, is skeezy 70s lounge singer. It's the band at their least immediate, but the sound has grown on me since the record was released.

Watch: "Four out of Five"
Watch: "Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino"

Beach House - 7

The seventh album from this duo follows a closet-cleaning B-sides release and a departure from their longtime producer, Chris Coady. While still identifiably a Beach House record, it does see them progressing their sound and making a more adventurous album than any of their previous work.

Watch: "Lemon Glow"
Watch: "Dark Spring"

Jess Williamson - Cosmic Wink

Coming just a couple of years after her sophomore album, Heart Song, Williamson's third covers an unlikely trio of life events. On the album, she sings of new love, moving cross country, and the aging of her canine friend.

Watch: "I See the White"
Watch: "Wild Rain"

La Luz - Floating Points

Floating Points is the third album from this LA-based band. A prominent theme of the album is dreams, subtly inferred by the album's title. They combine this with the "surf noir" sound they've already become known for.

Watch: "Cicada"
Watch: "Mean Dream"

SSION - O

SSION is the project of Cody Critcheloe and covers music, as well as visual and live performance. His more than 20 year career includes artwork design and direction for artists ranging from Charli XCX and the Yeah Yeahs Yeahs. O is his third solo record.

Watch: "At Least the Sky Is Blue" (featuring Ariel Pink)
Watch: "Comeback"

Essential Full-Length Releases

Common - Black America Again

2016 has been a crazy year, politically and culturally. The landscape has inspired many musicians to use their music to respond; including Common, who felt the need to response to this year's presidential election. The album takes an honest look at the history of racism against blacks in this country. It's saddening, but something that feels wholly necessary right now.

Watch: "Black America Again" (featuring Stevie Wonder)
Listen: "Home" (featuring Bilal)

Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - Until the Hunter

In the time since their last collaborative album, 2009's Through the Devil Softly, Hope Sandoval and Colm Ó Cíosóig both returned to their previous bands for reunion projects; 2013's m b v from My Bloody Valentine (Cíosóig) and Seasons of of Your Day from Mazzy Star (Sandoval). They started work on this album just the next year and worked with Michael Masley and Kurt Vile to bring it to fruition.

Watch: "Let Me Get There" (featuring Kurt Vile)
Listen: "A Wonderful Seed"

Jess Williamson - Heart Song

Jess Williamson comes from Texas and released her debut album, Native State, in 2014. Her sophomore album was recorded in her home state, as was her first, but she does not seek to simply recreate the record. She tackles her feelings of vulnerability, and doubts the comfort that home is supposed to bring.

Watch: "See You in a Dream"

Sasha Siem - Bird Burning

On her sophomore album, Siem uses birds to represent the phases of the soul; birth to death, and rebirth. On the record, she continues to use her considerable composition pedigree (she has written for the London Symphony Orchestra and many other venerated institutions) to create beautiful, but more pop-oriented, songs.

Watch: "Crow"
Watch: "Bird Burning"

Tinashe - Nightride

Tinashe has been teasing her sophomore album, Joyride, since September of last year. She's posted teaser videos, released tracks and videos from the album, and even embarked on a Joyride tour. This isn't Joyride (as you can probably tell from the title). Nightride has been in the works alongside the one she's been teasing and is intended to be the first half of the Joyride project to be completed next year.

Watch: "Nightride"
Listen: "Soul Glitch"
