Deerhunter - Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?

Eight albums in and Deerhunter is as good as ever. It's been a minute since the band's last album, 2015's Fading Frontier, though we got an album from one side project (Moses Archuleta's Moon Diagrams released Lifetime of Love in 2017) and an instrumental tour-only cassette from the band. Their record includes production from Cate Le Bon and Ben H. Allen III, who they have worked with previously.

James Blake - Assume Form

At the start of his career, James Blake's sound was more sonic, with his voice serving as an additional instrument, rather than being lyric-driven. That's gradually changed with each album, culminating in this record, which has many references to his relationship with actress Jameela Jamil.

Ronnie Milsap - Ronnie Milsap: The Duets

Ronnie Milsap has been an influential figure in country music for more than half of a century. On his 29th album, he partners up with some contemporaries and some younger artists for a collection of duets. Collaborators on the record include Luke Bryan, Dolly Parton, Kacey Musgraves, and Willie Nelson.

Sharon Van Etten - Remind Me Tomorrow

Across her previous four studio albums, Van Etten's sound has been an often-forlorn folk. On her fifth album, she's changing things up more than a bit. Written while she was pregnant with her child and delving into acting, its lyrics show someone more at ease in life and looking back a bit. It's also a more rock-driven sound, showcasing a different instrumentation than her previous records.

Toro Y Moi - Outer Peace

Following the release of his 2017 album, Boo Boo, Chaz Bear eschewed the standard promotional tour in favor of playing a series of DJ sets. He's influenced by those club sounds for this latest record, his sixth.

Upcoming Album of the Week (Ending October 13, 2018)

My blurb on St. Vincent in this post from a couple of weeks ago now seems a little prescient. The artist announced and released a collection of reworked songs from MASSEDUCTION, title MassEducation, this week! It's not make up exclusively of reworkings of "Slow Disco," so I was wrong about that, but, YAY, new music from St. Vincent!

Last week, Sharon Van Etten announced a long-awaited follow-up to 2014's Are We There, Remind Me Tomorrow.

Van Etten is a singer and songwriter from New Jersey who released her debut studio album, Because I Was in Love, in 2009 after a string of self-recorded and self-released albums. I've loved everything she's put out (and seen her live at any opportunity I got). Her music is personal and emotional, underlied by a strong voice with a melancholic bent... a bit more flowery than I try to get here, but I do love her so much.

She's taken the last few years off (other than reissuing that first album) and started pursuing a degree in psychology, started acting (you can catch her on Netflix's The OA), and had a child. It hasn't been a long absence, but a very welcome return none-the-less.

She announced Remind Me Tomorrow on October 2 and released the first single, "Comeback Kid."

The album is scheduled for released on January 18 of next year!

Damaged Bug - Cold Hot Plumbs

Thee Oh Sees and frontman John Dwyer are quickly reaching Guided By Voices/Robert Pollard levels of prolificness. In May, the band continued their consistency in releasing a new album every year with Mutilator Defeated at Last. Last year, Dwyer began his solo project Damaged Bug with Hubba Bubba. Just one year later, and a few weeks after the latest with his band, he is back with his sophomore solo record.

FFS - FFS

FFS is the collaboration of two very different bands; Franz Ferdinand, a Scottish art rock band active since the early 2000s, and Sparks, an LA chamber pop band around since 1971. It's not clear how exactly they hooked up, but it seems they've been recording together since around 2005. I'm not very familiar with Sparks, but the collaboration is certainly more experimental than the music that Franz Ferdinand create on their own.

No Joy - More Faithful

No Joy is a Canadian shoegaze band active since 2009. They began their career in their native Montréal and quickly gained the attention of more prominent musicians, including Grant Hart of Hüsker Dü and Bethany Cosentino, who described them as "Two hot blonde girls just shredding away." Six years and three albums later, they are still going strong, and getting better with every release.
